Location and possibilities:
Chocolate specialties and baroque flair – this perfect mixture makes up the irresistible charm of Modica. Situated on a hill this town in south-eastern Sicily is a 15 km from Ragusa and is divided in the two villages Modica Alta and Modica Bassa. The town between two valleys is a baroque harmony of old churches, squares, narrow alleys, staircases and buildings from the 18th Century. The most outstanding construction is the cathedral San Giorgio, reachable via 250 steps. Only a few steps away you will find the Palazzo Polara (18th Century), that look on the part of town Modica Bassa and its cathedral San Pietro, famous for its staircase with the twelve apostles. Modica is also known for its chocolate specialties, that have been enjoyed since the 17th century (when the Spanish brought the recipe with them) like the Aztecs used to do. Refined with cinnamon, chili or vanilla and cooled in a special way this specialty is an irresistible seduction. Marina di Modica is a true paradise for surfers and beach enthusiasts. Especially on hot summer nights numerous pubs, restaurants and clubs guarantee variety, fun and entertainment. Nearby you can find all the famous places, in which the renowned Commissario Montalbano from the mystery novels of the Sicilian author Andrea Camilleri investigates, i.e. in Pozzallo, known for its fine sandy beaches or the old fisher village Sampieri.
